The Five Best Selling Electric Cars Right Now

Electric cars are hot this year — but what’s been selling? Numbers from the end of 2016 provide some good indicators.

Researchers just came out with some of the top numbers from last month in December.

Five top models are responsible for about 69% of electric car sales around the country.

Here are some of the most popular brands and models on today’s market.

Tesla Model S

This Tesla favorite, from a breakaway specialty manufacturer, is a super popular EV sedan. In December, it had around 20% of market share overall, with 4000 units sold, according to industry reports. Praised for its range and proprietary engineering, the Model S is making big waves in today’s market.

Chevy Volt

GM’s top-selling hybrid EV car got about 17% of the December market. GM shipped over 3600 units to North American customers.

With a relatively low sticker price, this is a popular choice. Buyers can get many of the federal and state rebates that bring the sticker price even further down.

Look for the Chevy Bolt to take market share in the full-electric market.

Tesla Model X

Another Tesla model grabbed third place in December.

With 295 miles of range and a 100 kWh battery, the Model X seats seven. It also goes from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds.

Tesla bills this as an ‘SUV’ model. The company shipped 1900 of these in December, for about 10% of the market.

Nissan Leaf

Nissan’s green EV offering, the Leaf, also got about 10%. The Nissan Leaf is fully electric. It has a range of up to 107 miles. It also has a relatively low sticker price around $30,000, with rebates.

Buyers can choose from S, SV and SL models with various features packages.

Toyota Prius PHEV

A Prius PHEV model has been creeping up in the rankings. This plug-in hybrid only gets around 25 miles per charge. However, building on traditional Toyota appeal, it’s a big seller.

Toyota shipped over 6000 units in December.

Ford PHEVs

Two Ford PHEV models shipped over 1000 units each in December.

The Ford C-Max Energi PHEV and Ford Fusion Energi PHEV both deserve the fifth spot. The C-Max PHEV brings Ford’s green design to a compact car offering. The Focus Energi PHEV provides hybrid power in a mid-size car.

Consider getting all available federal and state rebates on any of these neat EVs. Look for big sales for these manufacturers as EV sales increase.
